I decided to create the painted acrylic version of my Bleeding Heart design from the Bloodline series. This is the first Bloodline image i’ve created that does not have a white background.
I purchased a black canvas from an online art store because my local art store did not have an 18″ x 24″ black canvas in stock. The black was a nice color but the corners had some nicks on them, and it looked like the black dye used on the canvas had settled in much darker when compared to the rest of the surface. Rather than order a new canvas, I applied a thin coat of black acrylic paint to the surface. It changed the canvas from a matte texture to a semi gloss, however it was only one coat so it created a sense of depth within the black (most areas are glossy while a few remained matted). I actually liked the new unique look of the black canvas and decided I would keep it.
After the black paint had dried up, I placed the stencil of my original art to paint the two red heart shapes. I went in afterwards with a fine brush and added the faces, hands, splatter and other details. The final painting looks great and the contrast between the red paint and black canvas is very strong. I plan on painting another version with the matted black background instead of the gloss. Check out the photos below!
